It's been about seven months since Star Wars The Last Jedi came out. And a lot has happened in the fandom. Some Say Star Wars is Dead and Disney Killed it. But can this dying franchise be redeemed and make a come back?
Remember when Lucas finally made the prequels and how bad the backlash was with the creation of Jar Jar Binks? It was like the fans turned on Lucas. They suddenly demonized him for creating this stereotypical possibly racist character abomination in the Star Wars universe. And the fans reacting in this uniting way that all felt the same . That their childhoods were some how ruined.
Do you remember that song about Lucas raping your childhood? It's funny how after the Last Jedi people started to defend the prequels because something far worse now exists than the prequels or the Star Wars Holiday Special.
What is it about this franchise that sparks such a reaction with the fans? This is such a strange phenomenon among emotions to such a beloved franchise.
Star Wars was originally escapist entertainment. Something that became enormously successful. It took us all on this journey this roller coaster ride that we saw over and over a million times. Hollywood hit the jackpot. A film with repeated viewing. Big bucks at the box office. Even Lucas had no clue as to how successful this movie would become. And how much it changed his life and many other people.
I remember how this movie made me feel as a kid. It was an event that exploded. But let's face it Star Wars was for nerdy shy awkward kids of which I was one. The cool kids thought they were too cool for Star Wars. Star Wars was for geeks and nerds. And when you got older you were not impressing some girl with your Star Wars collection. It's funny how now it is kind of cool to be a geek into comics and sci fi what ever now, because the fans have grown up and there are new generations that now love Star Wars. And it means a lot to so many people
So if you were or are that kid Star Wars became your happy place. It opened up this world of imagination. That anything in this escapism could be possible. And socially awkward kids like me needed it growing up. Because life as a kid sucked. And it sucks as an adult. At least we had Star Wars.
What Is it that makes this movie so Great? The hero's journey?. The characters. Luke Skywalker? Someone we can relate to? The fact that we can dream and its some where far away?
As much criticism that Lucas got for the prequels I still think the man is brilliant. No matter where his ideas came from. Lucas is the one who created it and changed pop culture as well as entertainment forever. The original Star Wars movie has stood test of time. It seems timeless.
By the time Lucas decided to make the prequels it was a dream come true. Some thing I never thought would happen. A friend of mine who grew up when Empire came out said when that first trailer hit the theaters he about shit his pants.
When I saw Empire it blew my mind because it was so different than the first one. The hero's didn't win. Darth Vader telling Luke he is his father. The fact that this was Episode five and that many more adventures would come around that would be different. Today people say something strange like people reacting to Empire and not liking it, I really don't know where people get this did they live in an alternate universe?
In my world Empire was one of the greatest sequels ever made. Lucas had balls. Leaving an unresolved cliff hanger that people had to wait three years that felt like an eternity to find out what happens next. By the time Jedi came out all these things were resolved and more in one nice package. But even though it had this happy ending it was kind of sad because it was the end of Star Wars at least for the movies. Star wars fans needed something to fill the void.
Then Lucas surprised everyone with the special editions and plans for the prequels. We all lost our shit. Then the movies came out and people were disappointed. I am not like the majority of the fans. I actually liked the prequels. At a time when it wasn't fashionable to like the prequels. This is when I realized how hard it is to please the fans.
Fan backlash caused George Lucas to be done with it and sold it to Disney. At least Lucas completed his story even if not everyone appreciated it. Star Wars was back again with the original cast. For me another dream come true. Until the Last Jedi. The most hated Star Wars movie ever.
The Last Jedi became the most talked about hated movie among the fans. And here is why. It just pissed off the fans in a way that took a big dump on the expectations of the fans. It was like Rian Johnson made a list of all the things fans wanted for this movie and did the complete opposite.
It amazes me how people defend this movie. It had so many cringe moments. And yes the infection of social justice warrior politics that made this movie even worse. This isn't a Star Wars movie it's SJW propaganda. The first order is the patriarchy and the resistance and the force is feminist.
When I was trying to figure this movie out I was like what is Rian Johnsons message here. The Force Awakens should have been called The Feminist Awakens. And The Last Jedi should have been called The Last Male Hero. This movie was so hated by the fans they rejected the Solo movie.
What makes no sense what so ever about Luke's character in this film is he is one of the people who can possibly stop Snoke. How is him dying and destroying the knowledge of the Jedi going to stop Snoke or Kylo Ren? The resistance is getting their ass handed to them. Their only hope seems to be Rey and if Kylo Ren didn't kill Snoke Rey would have been killed. She was no match for Snoke. Although she was persistent.
People who defend this movie say they like this idea that anyone can use the force. Without much training. This takes away the uniqueness of the Jedi. Han Solo was never able to use the force but his kid can because of Leia. How did Snoke become so powerful?
And what's with this stupid Reylo shit? Kylo Ren killed Han Solo can he even be redeemed?. It doesn't seem like it. Here is where they have an interesting situation where since Kylo didn't join Rey. He needs to become more of a threat to the galaxy. And what is Star Wars with out the Jedi? What happened to the knights of Ren?
Deep down I think many of us want to know how this story is going to end. Will the next movie fix the problems in a way that when you watch all three the story will some how make sense. This movie needs a climax on a high note. One that will make us all love Star Wars again. But I wish people would stop calling the fans toxic. WTF? I guess JJ Abrams Is our only hope.
